After yet another Covid cancellation at Lime Rock, the Trans-Am caravan headed to Austin, Texas and our back yard. This time Edward was in the Mustang, with its new Katech engine. It still lacked any testing time whatsoever, but both Scott and Edward have had a lot of laps at COTA, and Edward had finished third in the last TA2 race here, while Scott Borchetta had won the last National Championship in his Corvette here. We expected a good result, and but didn’t get it. At least the weather was perfect!
This was also the weekend of the Vintage National Championships, and a chance to run our vintage cars for the first time since the season started at Sebring. Clair, however, had a major conflict, and our other vintage racing clients were not yet ready to travel, thanks to Covid.
Clair and his wife Angela walked daughter Sami down the aisle during her outdoor wedding at the groom’s family’s ranch just outside of Le Grange, which is conveniently located within a few hour’s drive of Circuit of the Americas. But there was no way Clair was going to be racing on this particular weekend! We all attended the wedding and then headed back to the racetrack at oh dark thirty Sunday Morning.
Edward’s Mustang qualified 8th, while Scott’s Camaro was 16th in a field of 28 cars. In the race, Edward’s car developed a nasty understeer late in the race, and he ducked into the pits to make an adjustment, but didn’t get out soon enough to beat the pace car, so he went a lap down and decided to retire the car.
Scott recorded another top 10 finish, while Edward was credited with 17th, as he was four laps short of the checkered flag.
Normally that would be the last race of the year, but because of the cancellations, Trans-Am had one more event before closing the book on this season.
