After winning The Mitty in 2009, we expected to do it again, however the Grand Sport engine issues continued and we had to park it on Saturday.
The Mitty is more than a race; it’s an event. This year, in spite of the economy, it seemed bigger and better than ever.
At the track Edward was asked to drive a friend’s Cobra replica in the Group 5 race. This was a former PPG pace car, and it seemed hardly up to the task in Group 5, but Edward is Edward and after one practice session in the car (after which he pronounced the car ‘terrible’), he qualified 6th. The car had street tires, and they were old!
Edward started the first Group 5 feature race on the outside of the third row, but came out from under the bridge in second! He eventually finished third. It was an amazing drive.
Clair’s 68 broke a water pump pulley and didn’t finish.
Clair and Alan teamed up again in the 68 in the one hour-enduro, and again finished first in GT1, in spite of an engine that seemed down on power. Dennis Olthoff and Edward were teamed up to drive the Cobra in the enduro, with Dennis starting. Unfortunately the Cobra engine blew up after only a few laps, so that was it for Edward’s race driving for the weekend.
In the feature race Clair soldiered on to an 8th place finish despite a push rod that pierced its rocker arm and punched a hole in the valve cover.
Three engine overhauls coming up!
This was not the Grand Sport’s best race, but we were way fast for a while!
Edward – the only reason this car finished on the podium at the Mitty!
Clair and Alan won the GT1 class in the Enduro once again. |
