There was no time to test between Mid-Ohio and Brainerd, so the testing done during the race at Mid-Ohio would have to be enough for the Big Machine-Duntov Mustang at this track that was new to both our drivers. In the first session, one of our competitors went on track with a box of pop rivets sitting on the car. They soon spilled all over the track and holed one of Scott’s tires, sending him straight into a wall. We didn’t have a backup car, so Scott rented a Mustang from Mike Cope and now there were two Mustangs beneath the Duntov awning. Blasphemy!
Edward managed to qualify the Meissen Mustang 7th and was running 6th in the race when the engine let go. His fastest lap in the race was only 1.3 seconds off the winner’s fastest lap, so it seemed the Mustang was getting close. Later, when Katech looked at the data, they concluded the engine was about 50 HP down on power, so that 1.3 seconds didn’t look quite so bad after all.
Scott qualified the rent car 10th and finished 9th, not bad in a car he had never driven on a track he had never seen. After the race we took both cars to Mark Meissen’s rural shop just outside Chicago for wreck repair on Scott’s Camaro, while the Mustang engine went to Katech.
